John Legend’s new album, Wake Up, which is entirely produced and recorded with The Roots, is coming this September. They have performed together at a few shows this year and one of these occasions was this weekend in Philly, the night before The Roots Picnic at The World Cafe. In this epic set, JL and The Roots cover Roberta Flack, Curtis Mayfield, Teddy Pendergrass, Bill Withers and Donny Hathaway among others, with Black Thought adding in some rhymes. Ever since Nas & Damian Marley first collaborated on Welcome To Jamrock with the incredible “Road To Zion”, I had wished they would do an album together. Now that day has arrived as Distant Relatives was released to the world earlier this month. It’s absolutely my early candidate for album of the year, and their album release show at Highline Ballroom brought the music to life. Damian’s band was on point, translating the tribal songs on the album perfectly to the live setting. Here is our exclusive recordings of the night for a ton of songs from the evening and definitely catch the Distant Relatives tour this summer if it stops through your city.

The Gorillaz were one of the featured bands on Later With Jools Holland this week and were joined by album guests Mos Def and Bobby Womack to do “Stylo”. Also featued were Kano, Bashy and The Lebanese National Orchestra For Oriental Arabic Music (say that 10 times fast) to perform “White Flag”. Video streams and audio rips are below.
