As 2012 comes to a close, and we enjoy the holiday season, alive and well (yup, we made it, Mayans!), its time to take a look back at the releases this year and select the best of the best.  As with last year, since the focus of this site is always live music and we’re discussing studio albums, we’re providing a live song from each artist who made the list.

I am probably beginning to sound like a broken record, but its hard to name many live hip-hop bands better than Recess, and this show at Brooklyn Bowl is further proof.  Sene is having the best year of his young music career, releasing of my early vote for album of the year, Brooklynknight, while dropping some amazing visuals as well.   His solo work often overshadows his side project, Recess, but their talent is so overpowering that they will inevitably grab the spotlight soon.  One thing that sets Recess apart is that they constantly tweak their live renditions- adding extra guitar riffs, solos or new instruments to the mix, so it always feels fresh.  Just days before the crew rocked the stage, they released a new single, Between You And Me, which was also performed live at this show.  Check out a behind the scenes look at Recess recording the track at Converse’s Rubber Tracks studio, then hit the link to download our exclusive recording of the full live set from BK Bowl.

Recess, which consists of Brooklyn emcee Sene and the musical collective  The Clubhouse, took the stage at Tammany Hall in NYC last Sunday as part of the Kicks for Cancer event.  Their free EP hasnt left my rotation since it was released back in March (check it out here), so I was very excited to see how the music translated in the live setting.  After the 8-piece group crammed into place on the small stage, the energy in the building lifted as the crowd sensed that something real dope was about to transpire.  They didn’t disappoint either, breezing through selections from their debut EP, including bring out Fresh Daily and Nicholas Ryan Gant for “Au Revoir”.  The whole set was great with the only gripe being the set clocking in at a brief 25 min.  Here’s our exclusive recording of their performance.
