Lauryn Hill’s touring comeback has been a mixed bag. She’s been heavily criticized for showing up hours late to her gigs, and when she does hit the stage, her band performs altered, sped up renditions of her songs to the point where they are almost unrecognizable. With Coachella being her biggest performance stage yet since her return to touring, all eyes were on Ms. Hill to see if the old Lauryn would shine through. Early reviews of this set have been pretty varied, with some saying she made a triumphant comeback and others saying she had one of the most disappointing sets of the day. I was digging through the crates today and came across some of my older live Lauryn Hill recordings and I almost forgot how great it is. Its a damn shame she fell off the planet because her talent is undeniable, but people will remember her most recently for her concert fiascos over the past couple of years. Still, we can remember the good ol’ days as evident in this performance of “Lost Ones” with her band from across the pond back in 1999. I’d love to see her attempt a comeback, but I think thats wishful thinking at this point.
