2009 was a fantastic year for music and as we head into a new decade, its time to reflect on the best releases of the previous year. Since the focus of this site is live music and we’re discussing studio albums here, we decided to add a new, exclusive live song from each artist who made our list. So without further ado, here is ATWL’s Top 10 Albums and Mixtapes of the year.

Last week, Fat Freddy’s Drop touched down in California for their first ever concerts in the U.S. I made the trip out west to witness one of my favorite bands on the planet live for the first time and was completely blown away. The crowd’s energy, especially at the Los Angeles show, was intense and the New Zealand-based band was shocked at how much love they received across the pond. While I was at this show, it was also webcast, so here is the soundboard rip of the complete show, courtesy of oneworldreggae.com. Stay tuned for exclusive performances from their show at The Roxy, which I will be posting next week.

Fat Freddy’s Drop were the headliners at Gilles Peterson’s Awards show back in 2005. This show was actually my first introduction to the band and the rest is history. FFD will be making their debut in the United States with their first ever shows lined up on the west coast in San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego. I already booked my trip and if you truly love live music, I would advise you do the same. Here is their entire set from the Gilles Peterson Award Show at Kokos in London.

This was one of their best tours yet, with the addition of Ricky Gooch on drums, giving the band a broader live sound. If you are not familiar with Fat Freddy’s Drop, you need to get acquainted.

Fat Freddy’s Drop are my 2nd favorite band out there (The Roots being the other) as they bring a sound that is truly unique and incredible. They present a new spin to reggae-dub, combining elements of hip-hop, rock, funk, blues, electronica all under a reggae umbrella and headlined by the smooth soulful voice of lead singer, Joe Dukie. FFD gained intial acclaim when Gilles Peterson discovered their talents and praised them whenever possible on his BBC Radio program. They hail from New Zealand and to date have only toured in their native country, Australia and parts of Europe, but their live show is astounding and is not to be missed. I strongly urge you to check out their first release, Based On A True Story, and they are putting the finishing touches on their follow up record, due out this summer. Here is an electrifying rendition of “Roady” from a gig they had in Paris, as well as high quality video of a live performance of their new single, “The Camel” live from London last December (be sure to hit the “HD” button option).
