The Roots continue to amaze the NYC-based crowds at their weekly residency at Highline Ballroom. You never know what to expect each week, and recently the sold out crowd was blessed by an appearance from the Black Dante himself, Mos Def. They tore through some hip hop classics covers, Double Trouble, Casa Bey and a jammed out version of Umi Says. As always, the Jams are not rehearsed and done completely on the fly. Without further ado, here’s ATWL/TheRootsLive.com’s exclusive recording of Umi Says and Double Trouble from The Jam (FYI you can hear Black Thought spit a verse from The Roots’ new single during the Umi Says performance). Also check out Mos Def and The Roots performing Casa Bey on the Jimmy Fallon show here.
Black Thought made a surprise appearance during J. Period’s DJ set at the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival this past weekend. The highlight of his surprise appearance was rapping Game Theory as well as some new lyrics over the Brooklyn Go Hard beat. We have the soundboard audio and video for you below.
In celebration of the release of their long awaited new album, Dr. Boondigga and The Big BW, we travel across the pond to present a soundboard recording of Fat Freddy’s Drop amazing show at The Roundhouse in London from last December. This was one of their best tours yet, with the addition of Ricky Gooch on drums, giving the band a broader live sound. If you are not familiar with Fat Freddy’s Drop, you need to get acquainted.
Armageddon has been in effect, go get a late pass…. step! This time around the revolution will not be televised.
You ready to go back to ’88? The Roots held their 2nd annual festival, aptly titled The Roots Picnic, at Festival Pier in their hometown of Philadelphia this weekend. There was a lot of buzz leading up the event, mainly surrounding Public Enemy’s performance of It Takes A Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back in its entirety backed by The Roots and brooklyn-based afrobeat legends, Antibalas. After their incredible performance of “Bring Da Noise” on the Jimmy Fallon show backed by the same bands, we knew this was going to be a special performance…. and that it was. Since we’re still not ready to relaunch TheRootsLive.com just yet, we’ll unveil some exclusive audio of the performance right here at All The Way Live. Here are the performances of “Terminator X To The Edge of Panic“, “Don’t Believe The Hype” and “Night of The Living Baseheads“.
Travis Barker and DJ Am’s first joint project, Fix Your Face, was a dope mixtape of mashups. While I normally cringe at mash ups, these guys most defintiely do it right. They recently released Vol. 2 of their Fix Your Face mixtapes, and this time around its their live set from Coachella earlier this year. If you are a fan of Travis Barker’s remixes of popular hip-hop songs that he’s been posting up on YouTube, then you will definitely want to check this out.
Ok, well we're not really hiring, but are looking for new staffers who have an extensive live music collection. If you are interested, please email us.
